2015 Mercedes S63 AMG
Luxury and Performance
The Mercedes-AMG S63 Coupe can be considered three cars rolled into one. It’s a plush, superbly appointed luxury car, it’s a devastatingly efficient grand tourer and it’s also a supercar when you look at its performance potential. In fact, you could possibly throw in a fourth personality; that of a European muscle car. That a car, any car, can pull off this multiplicity of characters is amazing. That the S63 does it with such grace and fluidity is simply remarkable.
Magic Body Control
Starting with the full-sized coupe body, the AMG treatment of the S63 amounts to a range of modifications including a widening of the track and complete revision of the suspension layout. The S63 uses what Mercedes refers to as Magic Body Control suspension which uses adaptive dampers to tailor the ride and handling to the driver’s requirements. But it goes way beyond that and the AMG uses cameras to actually scan the road ahead, searching for imperfections and automatic altering its damping and ride height as milli-second-precise counter measures.
Under that long bonnet lives a twice turbocharged version of a hand-built 5.5-litre V8 that is specific to AMG models and pumps out no less than 430kW and a tectonic 900NM of torque. The enormous torque feeds through a seven-speed automatic transmission to the rear wheels.
Inside is remarkable as well and the SS63 has taken plush to new heights with retro-inspired speaker grilles, heated and ventilated seats and was one of the first vehicles to adopt Mercedes’ revolutionary full-width active instrument display which can be tailored so the passengers can watch television while the driver is guided by the satellite navigation. Touches like the 360-degree camera, metal starter button and panoramic sunroof all help to make what was already a special car even more so.
Features include: Navigation, keyless entry and start, heated and ventilated seats, TV, active exhaust, active suspension, active cruise-control, 360-degree parking camera, parking sensors, virtual dashboard, LED lighting.
