2016 BMW i8
The Earthly Supercar
Supercars have never been more efficient than the current crop; a function of growing concern over the state of the environment. But even the greenest conventional performance car can’t match the BMW i8 for sheer single-mindedness when it comes to squeezing every last kilometre out of every last drop of fuel. That the i8 also boasts true supercar performance while still saving the planet is utterly remarkable.
The look of the BMW speaks for itself, but it’s under that futuristic, composite skin that it really shines. With a lithium-ion battery array, an electric motor and a super-efficient turbocharged petrol engine, the BMW manages a combined output (when both the electric motor and petrol engine are working in tandem) of 266 kW. Combine that with the kerb weight of just 1,485 kg (despite being all wheel drive) and you have a recipe for a car that will rush to 100 km/h in 4.4 seconds and power on to a limited top speed of 250 km/h.
Amazingly, though, the i8 has an official combined fuel consumption figure of just 2.1 litres per 100 km. That’s partly because the petrol engine displaces just 1.5 litres from its three cylinders, yet still manages 170 kW on its own. In urban areas, the i8 can run purely on electric power for around 30 km. It also features a plug-in function, so it can be charged at home or work. As a mission statement on the future of high performance motoring, the BMW i8 says it all.
For all that, you never get the feeling that you’re driving somebody’s science experiment. The i8 has all the user-friendliness and standard equipment you’d expect from any high-end BMW. And the wow factor hasn’t been forgotten. The butterfly doors, laser headlights and aluminium platform all see to that. This particular example is finished in dark grey and has travelled less than 1000km.
Features include: Butterfly doors, hybrid driveline, keyless entry and start, leather trim, all-wheel-drive, navigation, laser headlights, 20-inch alloy wheels, tyre pressure monitoring, head-up display, active cruise-control, power front seats.
