2017 Ferrari 488 Spider
The first thing that strikes you about his car is the brilliant white paint. While 488 Spiders tend to be finished in either the classic Rosso Corsa red or an imposing shade of black, this car features a hue dubbed Bianco Italia. While many cars lose a degree of impact when painted white, the Spider is clearly not one of them, and the sparkling paintwork is a wonderful way to emphasise the aggressive yet sweeping lines of the folding-roofed 488’s shape. And Bianco Italia is not just a stunning take on a classic white, it was, when the car was ordered new, a $40,000 option.
All the Goodies
The original purchaser didn’t stop there with the options list, either; this car also features the factory carbon exterior pack, the carbon racing pack and a nose-lifter to make the car more compatible with a modern world of driveways and speed-humps. Inside, the options-box ticking continued with Goldrake racing seats (with a white central stripe picking up on the exterior colour) and even details like the coloured seat-belts.
Beyond that, the car features all the engineering and development that made the basic 488 such a great car, combined with the folding metal roof that gives the Spider true duality of purpose. As the first of Ferrari’s forced-induction mid-engined V8 designs, the 488 got a twin-turbocharged, twin-intercooled V8 engine measuring 3.9 litres and producing a hearty 493 kW. But perhaps even more impressive is the mountain-shifting 760 Nm of torque, produced at the incredible engine speed of just 3,000 rpm, giving this powerplant a huge spread of useable urgency. Part of that is due to the turbochargers doing their thing, but the engine also used race-proven technology such as dry-sump lubrication and all-alloy construction.
Security and Comfort
And for all that the folding metal roof doesn’t hinder security or comfort, neither does it really compromise performance. At just 50 kg heavier than a 488 GTB (coupe) the Spider has the same 0 to 100 km/h acceleration of 3.0 seconds and runs on to an almost identical top speed of 325 km/h.
