2017 Morgan Aero 8
Old World Charm
Even the people who make them know that Morgans represent a very specific automotive flavour. And, if the old world charm of a pukka Brit roadster, complete with a cockpit frame made of real timber (clad in aluminium) still doesn’t register, perhaps this car will. It’s the Aero 8 and, as well as all those attributes, it features a driveline that is sure to make a compelling argument to even the most hard-nosed car-fancier.
BMW's Awesome V8
That’s because the Aero 8, as Morgan’s first new design since the mid-1960s, retains all those charming qualities but combines them with a modern, V8 powerplant for genuine supercar performance. The story goes that Morgan and BMW were occupying adjacent pit garages at a Nurburgring 24-hour race in the 1990s. On finishing ahead of the Morgan entry, BMW race-team management were quick to point out the defeat to their pit-garage neighbours. “If we had your engine,” was the reply from Morgan, “we’d have beaten you”. And that, more or less, is how the Morgan Aero 8 came to be fitted with a BMW V8 engine.
Sharp on the Track
By the time this car was built in 2017, the capacity of the BMW-sourced V8 had increased form 4.4 litres to 4.8 litres and the performance of the sub-1,200 kg roadster (the lightest production V8 in the world in 2001) was absolutely phenomenal. And despite the retro appearance, this was a car that could also acquit itself well on a race track with sharp steering and vastly more roadholding than might have been expected of it.
1 of 5 in Australia
Morgan produced just 160 Aero 8s like this one, and it is believed a mere five examples were sold in Australia. That makes this not just a special car, but a special opportunity to grab a vehicle that spans so many motoring eras that it has become, itself, timeless.
Features include: Aluminium chassis, Mohair convertible top, quilted leather sports seats, walnut interior trim, keyless start, climate-control, leather sports steering wheel, immobiliser, alloy wheels, automatic transmission, factory hardtop.
