2018 Ferrari 488 GTB
There are more expensive Ferraris available. There are even faster ones (although this car’s performance is firmly in the hypercar category). Close to Perfection
The overall proportions are typical of the svelte sex-on-wheels that made Italy the global hub for cars that made grown adults go week at the knees. That shape, of course, is dictated by the mid-engined layout, a configuration that also underscores the car’s basic dynamics; fundamentally, a symphony of grip and dynamics, the result of near-perfect weight distribution. Perfection is a strong word, but given that no other car-maker has arrived to move the overall game on in any other direction, perhaps it’s not such a stretch.
Stepping it Up
The one area where the 488 GTB has given in to modernity is under the engine cover. Even then, not all has been forgotten, as the engine still uses a flat-plane crankshaft and has its eight cylinders arranged in a vee. The modern magic comes in the form of turbocharging and contemporary engine management which has meant a huge jump in both performance and efficiency; two goals once thought mutually exclusive. As well as outright power and fuel economy, flexibility has been the big winner here with the 3.9-litre engine able to summon up a wave of torque across a vast range of engine speeds. In fact, 760 Nm would be a monster figure for any 3.9-litre engine, but the 488 can muster up that number at just 3,000 rpm.
