1972 Dino 246 GT
As a classic model that has really hit its stride as a rising star, it’s difficult to think of a better example than the Ferrari Dino. Originally designed as a more affordable entre into the famous family of cars, the Dino was also one of the first cars to use the now trademark supercar layout of a mid-mounted engine. It was also the first Ferrari to be built in large numbers as buyers, particularly in the USA, discovered the magic of Maranello.
Simplicity and purity were Dino by-words and the 2.4-litre V6 provided not just enough power to propel the car beyond 230km/h in contemporary road tests, but also the sort of soundtrack and spirit that only true supercars have mastered. Light weight and positive steering gained the Dino a reputation for being spritely and easy to handle.
As well as its impeccable pedigree, this particular car is generally acknowledged by the local Ferraristi as one of the country’s best examples. It underwent a full mechanical and body restoration around 1990 at a well-known Melbourne workshop and the results speak for themselves. In fact, so perfect was the end result that this Dino was still winning concourse trophies years later. The Dino has been maintained in that condition and used only sparingly in the meantime.
