2011 Ferrari 599 GTO
Any Ferrari is special. But one with a GTO badge almost defies hyperbole. In fact, just three Ferrari models in the entire history of the marque have borne the GTO moniker and this one, the 599 Fiorano GTO was, at the time of its announcement in 2010, the fastest road-going Ferrari ever built. Faster even, around the factory’s Fiorano test track, than the revered Enzo.
Weight reduction (it was about 100kg lighter than a standard 599 GTB) was a major part of the 599 GTO’s ability to compress time and space, and as well as a carbon-fibre splitter, the GTO also got thinner panels, an aluminium bonnet and boot, thinner glass, forged alloy wheels and even hollow anti-roll bars. Even the insulation on the 599 GTO’s wiring was changed to a lighter material to save a further 3kg. Never before has `less is more’ been such a meaningful irony.
A pearl in many ways
The gearbox was fitted with shorter ratios and, overall, there were more than 100 detail changes over the 599 GTB. This particular 2011-built example is even more special (if that’s possible) with optional pearlescent paintwork based on the Ferrari Formula 1 team livery of the day. Such individuality didn’t come cheap and while, in 2011 the special paint added about $40,000 to the price-tag, today it adds yet another layer of exclusivity.
