Race car or road car
There are modern day classic Ferraris and then there is the 599 Fiorano GTO. The 599 was only the third model in Ferrari history to be bestowed with the GTO badge. However, unlike previous GTO’s (250 GTO and 288 GTO), this 6.0-litre, V12 front-engined thoroughbred was never homologated for racing. So, was it a race car tuned for the road, or was it a road car tuned for the track? Was it an apex-hunting predator or a long-bodied GT car with remarkable athleticism? Truth be told, the 599 Fiorano GTO Coupe was all that.
Formula 1 DNA
Indeed, the 599 GTO was a road car, but, it evolved from the track-only 599FXX designed by Ferrari’s Formula 1 engineers who were charged to bring F1 know-how to the coupe. Clever aerodynamics created more downforce, F1-style gear shifting gave rapid gear changes, a free-flowing exhaust liberated more power and enhanced traction and stability control programmes stretched the handling envelope.
Fastest Ferrari built
At the time of its launch in 2010, it was the fastest Ferrari road car ever built, lapping the Fiorano test circuit a full second quicker than the almighty Ferrari Enzo. The naturally aspirated V12 produced a staggering 493 kW of power and 620 Nm of torque. With a further 100 kg taken out of the 599’s overall weight, it was little wonder the GTO’s top speed was beyond 330 km/h!
1 of only 10 in Australia
Limited Production was limited to just 599 cars worldwide, with just 10 right-hand drive versions officially allocated to Australia. This is the only known Australian delivered Bianco Fuji white GTO and has travelled less than 200 kms.
It’s beautiful and bold exterior is matched by an interior boasting the highest levels of sportiness, refinement and comfort – elements which are normally conflicting yet Ferrari’s designers somehow managed to homogeneously meld with outstanding success.
